No one could’ve asked for a more perfect day to welcome the return of Glendale’s RugbyTown Sevens.
The 24 matches that took place over the course of the first day of the tournament brought blowouts, shutouts, and everything in between. Big hits and electric tries lead to upsets that shaped the first day of the tournament into a memorable one.
The reigning champion Ramblin’ Jesters picked up where they left off in 2019 with victories over the Colorado XOs, North American Lions, but they fell in the final match of the day to a Team Germany side that came to play. Germany escaped a tough Pool D with a 3-0 with wins over Barbados, Colorado XOs, and the Jesters.

They weren’t the only team to finish the day without a blemish on their record.
Army Rugby Union was the only team to escape with three wins in the military bracket. They’ll close pool play on Saturday with a match against Air Force.
In Pool B, DBlock Santa Rosa dazzled to a perfect 3-0 record with wins over SaberCat 7s, USA U-23s, and the Oregon Sharks. They weren’t the only team to leave without a loss in their own bracket, though, as SoCal Griffins put a bow on the day with a solid 17-14 victory over SaberCat 7s in the late slate of matches. Santa Rosa and SoCal Griffins will square off for the top spot in the bracket on Saturday at noon.
Pool C saw Tsunami Barbarians sit atop the table with an unblemished 3-0 record. The Barbarians turned some heads when they handed a loaded Samurai side a 19-7 loss in their second match of the day. Tsunami defeated Gorilla Rugby their second loss of the day in the penultimate match of Day 1. Tsunami will try to complete the clean sweep of Pool C on Saturday against ROOTS Rugby.
All of the action resumes on Saturday, August 21 at 11 AM. Fans can purchase tickets and stream all of the action on Day 2 on RugbyTown7s.com.
